In Deep: Fathom Magazine

The National Maritime Museum Cornwall...

commissioned me to photograph a selection of artefacts, items and a new art installation on display at the Museum in Falmouth.

The purpose of the photography shoots split over various dates was to document a series of artefacts that were kindly donated for the Titanic Exhibition by the Claes-Göran Wetterholm Archive, a selection of various exhibitions, items already on display and an art installation by artist Dan Arnold.

The selection of items to photograph was pretty varied and required a selection of photographic setups from using available natural light and reflectors, studio product photography using flash lights and outside editorial style photography. Some items even required some very careful handling using gloves to protect their already delicate condition.

A particularly abstract art installation featuring string balls suspended from a ceiling bathed in a bright neon blue light needed a tripod setup and some slower shutter speeds accurately capture the light as it was displayed.

I've added a few images and their accompanying magazine page features below for context as to where and how the images were used.

The small, roughly 6cm tall Titanic skull...

was one of the more macabre items photographed on this commission and with it's vacant gaze and a clean white studio background, the stark impact of this piece of Titanic themed merchandise brings the tragic event itself into perspective.

The Huer's horn...

was already on display to the public in the Museum, so this studio photograph added to the set of images that were produced more as a documentary style presentation of artefacts on a clean white background. Some items like the old Diving suit and the Pilchard oil Lamp for example were photographed on location in their own display areas. I used a selection of reflectors and diffused flash light to photograph them in sometimes quite a low level of ambient light.
